Here at The Doctor’s Method, tooth extractions are commonly carried out amongst our patients. While it might seem like a frightening prospect, it can go a long way in helping preserve your oral health, as well as your smile. Here’s what to expect from your treatment. 

  • First, we’ll take a look at your tooth and assess whether further treatment is required.
  • A local anaesthetic is then given to numb the area. It’s not usual for the patient to be sedated during this time, but this can be offered if desired. The tooth is then removed. Occasionally, and in cases where the tooth is impacted, it may need to be removed in segments or ‘rocked’ gently to ease it out of position. A gauze is then used to ‘plug’ the gap, and stitches may be required to aid with healing.
  • If further treatment is required which can’t be carried out at the time, we’ll book you in for a follow-up appointment.

  • How long does treatment take?

    For single tooth extraction, this can typicallybe carried out within an hour. In cases where several teeth are being removed, your appointment may take longer.

  • Does treatment hurt?

    Tooth extractions are performed under anaesthetic. You may feel movement and pressure, but shouldn’t feel pain. To keep pain and complications to a minimum following treatment:

    • Take painkillers, such as paracetamol, as necessary.
    • Keep an eye on the gauze pad (dressing) used and ensure you change it as directed.
    • Ease swelling and soothe pain by applying a cold compress to the cheek/jaw area.
    • You will require some recovery time (for instance, taking the afternoon off work) and it may not be advisable to drive straightaway.
    • Ensure you brush and floss as normal, but avoid this in and around the treated area. A saltwater rinse can also help keep the site clean.
    • Avoid smoking, which can inhibit healing, and try to eat soft foods while healing. 

  • What are the risks and side-effects?

    There are some complications which can occur following a tooth extraction. If you experience any of these, you should contact our practice as soon as possible.
